“Something In The Way,” - Nirvana: One of my favorite songs off of legendary grunge band, Nirvana’s iconic album, Nevermind. It’s a totally different sound in comparison to most of the album, as it is centered around minimalist acoustic guitars, and barely any percussion. The mournful violins are also a very nice addition, and I always remember this track from the 2022 Robert Pattinson Batman movie. It fits so perfectly with the vibe of that movie, and it’s one of Nirvana’s most under appreciated songs.
“Let the Flames Begin,” - Paramore: While not a single, this is easily one of the best songs on Paramore’s 2007 pop-punk classic of a record, Riot! The powerful chugging guitar riffs in the chorus contrast the gentler riffs during the verses very well. Hayley Williams is one of the best female rock vocalists of the 2000s, as her vocal range is impressive and especially strong on this track.
“What I’ve Done,” - Linkin Park: Every kid who grew up in the 2000s and 2010s knows how influential Linkin Park was. Their sound is technically “nu-metal,” but it sounds way different than the vast majority of that genre. Their music has actually aged like a vintage wine, unlike most nu-metal groups. This track is one of their best ever, and it’s hard to choose my personal favorites, but I know that this is definitely one of them. The memorable piano riff throughout, and alt-rock guitars in the chorus, paired with Chester’s powerful vocals about forgiving oneself, feel quintessentially like true Linkin Park.
“High By the Beach,” - Lana Del Rey: A strong highlight off of Lana Del Rey’s 2015 album, Honeymoon. It incorporates trap pop elements, which is a sound that I really like when Lana uses it, and I wish she would use it more in her newer music. The dreamy organs and synths create this surreal experience that’s really hard to put in words. Definitely one of Lana’s best singles.
“I KNOW ?,” - Travis Scott: The low-key piano loop in this track paired with the rhythm of the 808 drum machine complement Travis’ melodic flow very well. My favorite verse is easily his first verse, and that chorus is incredibly catchy.
