Supercharged is the eleventh album from Garden Grove punk rock band, The Offspring. A well-respected punk band, they’ve made many iconic songs that I’ve grown up with such as “You’re Gonna Go Far Kid,” and “The Kids Aren’t Alright.” Without further ado, here are my thoughts.
While I like The Offspring, I feel that this album is much weaker than my personal favorites of theirs, such as the record, Americana, Rise and Fall Rage and Grace, and Smash. The album doesn’t really do much to sound innovative or exciting. The production is solid, the guitar riffs are decent, but I don’t know. This album doesn’t have the staying power that tracks like, “Hammerhead,” or “Come Out and Play,” do. Some of the tracks are solid, but the main reason I like a track like, “Make It All Right,” is because it sounds like a Blink-182 song. The tempo and guitar riffs sound incredibly similar to “All the Small Things.” “Ok, But This Is The Last Time,” is another solid track with the shifts in tone between distorted to clean guitar and back. It incorporates cool elements like orchestral strings, which I don’t remember ever hearing on an Offspring album. I will say that the second half of the album is stronger than the first half.
In conclusion, it’s not a terrible album, but it’s very forgettable and doesn’t stand out in The Offspring’s overall discography. We didn’t really need this album, and while there are concepts that I like instrumentally, I’ve just heard so many better albums this year. I did like that call back of “Carry On Wayward Son,” with the guitar solo on “Get Some.” Excellent touch. Overall, not the worst thing, but not great either.
