Some Sexy Songs 4 U is the first collaborative album from Canadian hip hop artists Drake and PartyNextDoor. Drake had a pretty rough 2024 to put it mildly, as Kendrick pretty much ended his career with the diss tracks he released on him, with “Not Like Us,” winning multiple Grammys. Drake, in my opinion hasn’t really released songs that I’ve enjoyed since around 2018, so I really wasn’t looking forward to this. Anyways here are my thoughts.
The genres this record falls under include R&B, hip hop, and trap. It’s a collection of mostly love songs, and it includes Drake complaining about not only Kendrick, but also what seems to be his modus operandi as of late, which is to complain about being a rich bachelor. What bothers me a lot about the very first track, “CN TOWER,” is that Drake and PartNextDoor’s vocals are so processed and auto-tuned that it sounds practically like a meme rap song using it ironically. The beat is also very cheap and boring, as it’s trying to go for a moody atmospheric vibe but falls very flat on its face. In fact, the majority of this album features very heavily auto-tuned and processed vocals to the point where it sounds like AI. Both singers sound so whiny and shallow, and both artists have used way better production in the past. It feels as if Drake is trying desperately to return to the sound that made him a star, while missing the mark completely in the process. It’s like he’s completely unaware why this isn’t working, as lyrically and musically, the direction Drake was going in earlier in his career on albums like Take Care or Nothing Was The Same, were far more refreshing and impressive records by far. The themes he was diving into were actually interesting, like his feelings towards his fame, failed relationships, his feelings towards his family and friends, and loneliness. He was lyrically impressive, his production was melodic and maximalist, by comparison this album just feels severely lazy and shallow. In addition, this album is long but feels incredibly lacking in substance and content. There’s some tracks I enjoyed like “SPIDER-MAN SUPERMAN,” and “GIMME A HUG,” mainly for the production, but vocally, I find them much more listenable than the rest of the tracks on this album. I could go track by track reviewing this thing like I usually do, but I feel most of the tracks, like “SMALL TOWN FAME,” and “MEET YOUR PADRE,” pretty much speak for themselves in their laughably bad quality vocally and instrumentally.
To wrap things up, I was expecting this album to be terrible, and it proved me right. Majority of the vocals on this thing are grating and sound super artificial and hollow, and the instrumentals miss the mark about 90% of the time. It gives me a lot of Vultures vibes, I don’t know if anyone else has said this, but two washed up artists collaborating after the biggest name of the two said goodbye to their long-storied career with a legacy-destroying controversy feels like deja vu. Don’t waste your time listening to this album, as it’s painful to listen to and most importantly, incredibly boring.
