Five Songs Stuck in My Head Week 1 March
“Don’t Wanna Fall in Love” - Jane Child: I first discovered this song while playing Grand Theft Auto V, it plays on the Non-Stop Pop radio station in the game. It’s incredibly fun to run over people (in the game) while bopping your head to this catchy tune. I don’t know anything about Jane Child or her music but this song is a total bop. The classic 80s orchestration with those loud snares and funky synth keyboards makes for a great driving song, whether it’s in GTA or out on PCH.
“Give Me the Night,” - George Benson: This song has such a catchy guitar riff, and even though it was released in 1980, it sounds like a super groovy 70s dance floor tune. “Cause there’s music in the air and lots of lovin’ in the air, so give me the night!” Benson is an amazing jazz and R&B guitarist, as well as a solid singer. I didn’t know that he was a singer as well until I heard this song. This song is perfect for wedding playlists and I highly recommend it.
“Spicy,” - Nas featuring Fivio Foreign and A$AP Ferg: Nas is one of the greatest rappers of all time, which isn’t exactly a hot take. The beat has a really cool piano loop and the drum rhythm is great as well. Fivio’s verse is ok, but A$AP Ferg probably had the best verse on the track. I mean he completely stole the show. He flows on the beat like he’s Muhammad Ali in a fight, and as a result, it’s incredible on the ears.
“Black Hole Sun,” - Soundgarden: This song is so beautiful, the guitar riff during the verses is soaked in reverb and then during the chorus that gnarly heavy distortion comes in, and the combination creates a masterpiece. In addition, the late great Chris Cornell has a powerful voice and the song reminds me of a rainy day spent inside. “Black Hole Sun, won’t you come, and wash the rain away?” The guitar solo at the bridge from Kim Thayil is impactful as well.
“Lesson Learned,” - Vory: I first discovered Vory through Kanye West’s 2021 album Donda, and was amazed at how beautiful his voice was. This song reminds me a lot of “Marvin’s Room,” by Drake, as Vory sings about a girl who broke his heart. I love the stripped back sound, the piano instrumental is relaxing too. “I think I learned my lesson this time.”
