Five Songs Stuck In My Head Week 4 March

  1. “Lucid Dreams,” - Juice WRLD: One of my favorite tracks by the late, great rapper Juice WRLD. The chorus is incredibly catchy, and that soothing harp instrumental is iconic. “I still see your shadows in my room, can’t take back the love that I gave you,” is an incredibly relatable line in which anyone who’s experienced heartbreak can relate to. Juice’s melodic flow is pleasant on the ears, as while sure, there’s autotune used, Juice is a pretty talented singer, so the autotune is not extremely noticeable. It’s a shame he died so young, because his sound was so influential.

  2. “Freedom,” - Clipse: The legendary rap duo of Pusha T and No Malice (formerly Malice), spit tight flows over a bluesy guitar instrumental with a hard hitting drum beat. The track samples “Open Letter,” by Potter St. Cloud. Pusha’s verse is my favorite on the track, because he gets very personal and self-critical. He talks about how his fame has put a burden on him when it comes to family and friendships, which isn’t always something King Push talks about in his music. “Pompous motherfucker, just look what them jewels made me. I’m only finding comfort in knowing you can’t replace me.” I might review this album in the near future.

  3. “Falling Down,” - Lil Peep and XXXTentacion: Two Soundcloud rap pioneers who both died too young. I wasn’t the biggest fan of either of them, I liked some of X’s music in high school, but I’ve always been more of a Kanye and Kendrick Lamar kind of guy. X was the most famous Soundcloud rapper, but he was also an incredibly divisive figure. He was insanely talented as a rapper and had a solid singing voice too. I love the emo influence of this track and how, despite this track being a posthumous release for both rappers, both of them sync perfectly together.

  4. “Bandit,” - Don Toliver: Not to be confused with the song by Juice WRLD and NBA YoungBoy, which is another banger. Don Toliver melodic rapping on this track over that distorted guitar sample, and the secret uncredited Travis Scott feature, has me looking forward to the new Don Toliver album. I also like how the track samples a Tame Impala song.

  5. “Miss Murder,” - AFI: Probably my favorite AFI song, along with “Girl’s Not Grey,” “Miss Murder,” is a pop punk track that features the melodramatic vocals of frontman Davey Havok. I love the guitar riffs on this track as well from Jade Puget. I’ve gotta listen to more pop punk, as the main punk groups I listen to are My Chemical Romance and Green Day.
