MUSIC is the third solo album from Atlanta rapper Playboi Carti. After nearly five years of waiting for a new album, his fans got what they had been eagerly anticipating. At 30 tracks long, I’m not going to go track by track reviewing the whole thing, but is it any good?

There really isn’t that great of quality control on this record, as there’s some tracks I really enjoyed, but overall the album is really messy and at times sounds unfinished and poorly mixed. Beats on tracks like “POP OUT,” and “MUNYUN,” are terribly produced, and that’s me being nice. The bass on the latter track is choppy, and sounds like it’s cutting in and out constantly, and the snares are way too quiet in the mix. The features on this thing are incredibly hit or miss as both of Kendrick Lamar’s features are just really phoned in. There’s beats on this thing I really like, like on “BACKD00R,” and “I SEEEEEE YOU BABY BOI,” just as an example, but the tracks on this album overall are some of Carti’s weakest, in my opinion. Some of the better features on this thing are the cuts featuring Travis Scott, The Weeknd, and Young Thug. I’m personally not the biggest Carti fan, but I do like his vocal performances generally speaking, as well as his overall aggressive and varied delivery. These are strong points for me, but they really aren’t enough to save this thing. This album definitely would’ve benefited from being 15 tracks shorter, and for an album that his fans had been waiting nearly half a decade for, it’s incredibly disappointing. “EVIL J0RDAN,” “CRUSH,” “MOJO JOJO,” and “PHILLY,” are easily the best tracks on the record, and maybe this album would’ve been better had Carti and his team took more time on tweaking the record and cutting down the excess tracks. Quantity over quality, definitely doesn’t result in flawless music.
